Description Amenities In the area Map Reviews
Located one block from the charming medieval village center, this cheerful apartment is on the second floor of a restored village house dating from the 1850’s. The lively village of Ceret is nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees very near the Spanish border and surrounded by picturesque vineyards and orchards. The apartment offers a peaceful and charming setting where one can enjoy the mountain and sunset views from the street side terrace and views to the large community garden from the other side of the building.

One enters into the comfortable sitting room at the center of the apartment. Furnished with a double sofa bed, several chairs, and a coffee table, there is window and a door connecting the living room to the kitchen. The large American-style kitchen has a sideboard, table that seats eight, new refrigerator, gas range, new counters and sink, original sink, bright yellow corner cupboard pantry, blue and white cabinets, and all the necessary dishes and cooking utensils.

Of the two bedrooms, each with a comfortable double bed, one has a closet, and one an armoire. Both are on the street side of the apartment, each with a French door to a small balcony overlooking the village street. Both bedrooms are at the end of a hallway, away from the living room, with wooden bedsteads, bedside tables and reading lamps. One of the bedrooms has a small alcove with an extra rollaway bed, great for a family with a young child. Of the two bathrooms, one is off of the hall just before the living room, with shower and sink only. The other has a tub with shower, vanity, and washing machine. Facilities include separate toilet room, ceiling fans in bedrooms, central heating, telephone, TV with DVD player, and CD/tape player.

· Unique cultural ambiance of the Catalan region near the Spanish border.
· Terrace with views to garden and mountains.
· In village, walking distance to shops.
· TV, DVD player, CD/tape player, and washing machine.
·  Wi-fi internet access

Ceret, located in the fascinating region of France that is proudly Catalan, has a distinct Spanish flavor to its culture and traditions. There is regular outdoor Sardana dancing and bullfighting. At Easter there is a colorful procession and another big Sardana Festival in August. Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Ceret is famous for its cherry orchards and features a great Saturday market with local produce and goods year round.

In the early 1900’s, Ceret was a favorite spot for many great modern artists including Picasso and Braque and was regarded as the center of Cubism in the early 1900’s. There is an excellent Museum of Modern Art with several cubist paintings, a Picasso collection, and works by Chagall, Dali, Miro, Matisse and Juan Gris as well as the Catalan sculptor Manolo. There are facilities for horseback riding as well as hiking in the mountains on well-developed local and national paths. There are also many castles, Cathar fortresses, medieval abbeys and churches, dramatic gorges and caves, interesting villages and beaches in both France and Spain.

Within a short drive, there are several beautiful white sand beaches, including Canet-Plage, Argeles, Collioure and Port-Vendres. With cobbled streets, galleries, cafes, and even a castle, Collioure has all the charm that villages along the Cote-d’Azur had before they became so popular. The regional wine and food is distinct and excellent. Carcasonne, the renowned medieval walled city, is a 90-minute drive away. The bluest skies in all of France shine over Perpignan, half an hour away.

General Location Map

Large spacious light-filled apartment in old building, front windows of the two bedrooms on (quiet cobblestoned) street, back windows of kitchen opening onto a balcony with table and chairs that overlooks a community garden and to the Pyrenees in the distance.  Southern in feel and furnishings, well equipped, comfortable.  Only issue for limited mobility people is that it's up three stories and no elevator.  The location is great -- just up this hill (rue de la Republique, I think) is the main plaza of the town with the classic linden trees, cafes, bakery, site of the weekly farmers market, and location of the Museum of Modern Art with Picasso ceramics and other cool paintings and objects.  Across the plaza is the gate to the old city.  The town is quite appealing.  Many English retirees there. The town is well situated, a short drive west of Perpignan, a short drive north of the coast.
We loved it and I'd love to go back there.  Jonis D. Seattle, WA 2008
